It simply amazes me the sheer amount of events that get jammed into one weekend.This Saturday there are not one, but two color runs taking place in upstate New York. I've written about these runs in the past. In a nutshell, you run a 5k in a white tee-shirt and have colored cornstarch thrown at you rendering you a moving tie-dyed human. The Color Run will be taking place in Rochester, while the Color Me Rad takes place in Syracuse. I rather assume these guys don't like each other; I'll be interested to see what there participation numbers are. I read somewhere that 60% of people who run a color run never participated in a running event before.

If decorating yourself with mud rather than color is your thing the inaugural Mighty Run takes place on Saturday at the Masonic Care Community. A 5k relay with obstacles. Survival runs like this have become very, very popular. I really hope this grows as this could become a real regional draw.Make-A-Wish is having a Walk/ Fun Run this Saturday at Onondaga Community College.Finally, the Mountain Goat takes place in Syracuse on Sunday. You know when a race sports the moniker Mountain Goat it's not a gentle rolling course- it's a very tough event. They also offer a flat 3k for those who want to participate in a more sane level as well as a Kid's Run.

I'm guessing between the outstanding weather forecast for the weekend and the rather defiant attitude the running community has after the Boston Bombings that they may hit a participation record.The point of this blog is not to get you to participate in these specific events. Rather, it's to point out these are events out there for every age group/ physical ability. In fact, at this time of the year, perhaps the toughest thing is to choose what event you want to participate in!Whether you're walking for a cause or wading in the mud, get off your duff and do something! This relatively new technique involves altering the trajectory of electromagnetic waves in unusual ways by mathematically transforming the waves' constituent electric and magnetic fields, as has famously been done to create "invisibility cloaks" that can shield objects at certain wavelengths. The aim of the Barcelona group, having got together with Ignacio Cirac and Oriol Romero-Isart at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching near Munich, was to apply transformation optics to static fields in order to couple two quantum systems magnetically.

The researchers' first step was to model an infinitely wide slab of material with infinite magnetic permeability along its thicknes  and zero magnetic permeability along its width. They found, as they had hoped, that any magnetic field at the slab's lower surface would simply be shifted to its upper surface. Next they investigated whether or not the properties of this idealized system could be approximated in a real object. They found that a cylindrical piece of the same material, with a finite diameter, would do the job almost as well. But that still left the problem of mimicking the material's extreme anisotropy.

Looking ahead, they believe the new device could be used to manipulate quantum information at the nanoscale, for example via the isolated spins of defects in small crystals of diamond known as nitrogen vacancies. To function as bits inside a quantum computer, these spins should be independently addressable with magnetic fields, something that could be achieved with nano-sized magnetic hoses, they say. Such nano hoses, they add, might also be used to couple the spins.

Officials issue safety warning after early morning fire

The Association for Rubber Products Manufacturers has conducted the first of two annual domestic hose technical committee meetings to protect U.S. rubber hose and belt standards monitoring and governance.About 30 people participated in the March 25 event in San Antonio and addressed two issues—revision of an industry publication and the hose manufacturer's colored identification code list."One of the main items addressed was the progress on the updating of the hose handbook," said Richard Batzer, ARPM hose technical coordinator. "We made some decisions, and we are now sending these items out for review to select individuals to get them ready for publication."

Batzer said preparing the handbook is a major effort, since the previous publication's content is insufficient."There is a significant amount of table reformation. We're nearly finished with eight chapters with three remaining," he said.These codes in the colored yarn are used to identify the hose manufacturer and are placed under the reinforcement so they can be identified in the event the cover is destroyed."These codes are basically for liability protection," Batzer said. "We found that some of these codes have been issued for 50 or 60 years. A lot of the companies on the old list are out of business or have merged with other companies. Our job is to identify who on the list is active and take out the color codes that are obsolete."

"Instead of trying to fight the fire yourself, we really encourage people just to stay away from the building," said spokeswoman Carol Henke."Once a building is on fire, a garden hose is going to do virtually nothing."The resident who noticed the fire tried to call 911 from inside the house but the line was not working properly."We don't know why the phone wasn't working," Henke said."Unless you're completely trapped and absolutely cannot get out of the building, we never want people to call from inside the building. That's really important."She said fires double in size every 30 seconds, and by the time a resident calls 911, answers all the questions and conveys all the information, it may be too late to leave.Instead, she said, use a cellphone or call from a neighbour's home.The fire department said the home will need extensive repairs to be habitable again.
