Volunteers with American Hose Company No. 1 will go door-to-door again today for donations for this year's "Thunder Over Ashland" fireworks display, which will be held at dusk July 3, at Memorial Field. The rain date is July 7. A tag day will be held beginning at 9 a.m. July 1. The fire company sponsors the Ashland event.Saturday Night Bingo games are held weekly at the Coaldale Ambulance Building. Doors and the kitchen open at 5 p.m. and games begin at 6:30 p.m. The event includes a variety of games. Free coffee and tea are available and there are weekly door prizes.
The Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art has announced the schedule for its 2012 summer camps, where people can explore the world of nature and art. The camps, according to a release from Alexis Dow Campbell, the center's director of creative programming, are designed for exploration through experience-based activities. Registration is open for the camps and various fees apply. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes. Those attending full-day camp sessions must pack a brown bag lunch with extra water. Light snacks will be provided.
Family Night at the Pottsville Free Public Library will focus on self defence at 6 p.m. Thursday. Local karate instructor Dennis Tobash will focus on different self-defence techniques. The event is for children ages 6-12, according to Darren DeArment, the library's head of youth services.

Firefighters remember friend lost in Cheesequake Creek
A group of firefighters gathered on Tuesday afternoon at Sayreville's Melrose Hose Company 1, where the flag was lowered to half-staff, to reminisce about their friend and fellow firefighter, Paul Chrzaszcz."He was a good guy," Assistant Fire Chief George Gawron said. The 24-year-old South Amboy resident, who dove into the murky waters of Cheesequake Creek near Morgan Marina on Gondek Drive about 8 p.m. Monday, was found dead on Tuesday.Chrzaszcz, a volunteer firefighter in South Amboy and Sayreville, was found in the creek about 75 feet west of the marina, Sayreville Police Sgt. David Lasko said. Just before noon Tuesday, rescuers were seen carrying a body covered in a white sheet to shore.
On Monday night, Chrzaszcz dove into the water and did not resurface, Lasko said. He was reported missing by a friend, Evan Barchowski, 22, of South Amboy. The two had been boating on Sunday, when the small motor fell off the boat. They located the motor underwater and used a magnetic device to mark the site, Lasko said. The two returned on Monday to retrieve the motor.Lasko said a search team from the State Police's aviation and marine units, a dive team from Franklin Township and the Sayreville police were mobilized Monday night. The search was suspended at about 11:30 p.m. and resumed Tuesday morning.
