Once a year, every hose in the Wauwatosa Fire Department's service has to be pressure-tested – and guess who gets to do the grunt work? Thursday was Conor Quinlevan's one-year anniversary with the Wauwatosa Fire Department, which means it was also his first day off probation – a full-fledged Tosa firefighter at last.You'd think he'd get a party or some kind of ceremony. Instead, they sent him out to test hoses, on the wet end.
He did rate an assistant, though, now that he's ranked – Christopher Sandoval, who's been on the job all of three months, got to help.I stepped out of my house Thursday afternoon to find Quinlevan, Accessories,Sandoval and a host of other firefighters hemming me in with a pumper truck and a massive firehose snaking down my street in long loops.
With all the utility excavation that's been going on for weeks on my street and throughout the neighborhood – fuel hose suppliers,the concrete saws and backhoes were hard at it again Friday morning – I was sure something seriously bad had happened to my nearest fire hydrant or the water main itself.Nope, said Lt. Barbara Kadrich. "We're just testing our hoses."It seemed worth a picture or two, anyway, and since I couldn't leave my driveway until they were finished, I got the whole scoop on hose-testing.

Delaware Burn Camp brings fun to victims
The camp was filled with a variety of activities that are designed for fun, learning, and development of campers' self-esteem. All activities are tailored to meet the physical and special needs of burn survivors. Some of the activities held at the camp included swimming, boating, fishing, movies, archery, dancing, hiking, arts and crafts, horseback riding, and many more.
"This is our fourth season," said Joanne Hutchison, president of the Delaware Burn Camp and a nurse at Bayhealth Medical Center. "The first year we had six children and we've grown to 14 survivors this year. The biggest problem we have is getting the word out to the children about the camp. Even though we are nurses, we can't solicit the children through our jobs. We put the literature out there and hope the parents see it."
The burn camp is staffed by nurses, firefighters, volunteers, professional and non-professional people from around the state, and welcomes any child between the ages of 6-18 who has sustained a serious burn injury. Everything is free of charge to the families of the children. Money is raised through the fire service, private organizations, and supportive community members.

Hudson River jaunt turns into misadventure for Kansans
They weren't in Kansas anymore.Four men from the Sunflower State experienced some rough waters on the Hudson River Monday evening, causing the homemade pontoon they were riding to overturn.The accident brought out the East Kingston and Ulster Hose fire departments, their marine units and members of the Kingston police and Ulster County Sheriff's Office as well as other emergency personnel.
The incident happened at 6:02 p.m in the vicinity of Robert Post Park.The four men on the boat, Dick Schremmer of Derby, Kansas, High Temperature Hose,and Bobby Joe Cox, Mark Lawrence and Jeff Pritchard, all of Wichita, were all unharmed.East Kingston Fire Chief Bill McDermott said the men were standing on top of the boat when the fire company arrived.Firefighters brought the men to shore at Charles Rider Park and then secured and recovered the pontoon.

Sanitation hosing serves several purposes

Hose woes Water, water everywhere
I am a one-percenter.No, I am not among Americans in the top one percent in terms of wealth. Far from it, in fact.Instead, I am among the one percent of Enid residents who do not have a private water well.At least it seems that way, judging by the number of signs reading “Low Temperature hoses suppliers,” or some iteration of such, you see stuck in front yards or hanging from fences all over town these days.
Some are obviously professionally produced, others handmade and hand-lettered.For those reading this on Al Gore’s worldwide Accessories suppliers or who have been too busy watching all gazillion hours of Olympic TV coverage the past couple of weeks to look out the window and see their lawns burning up, Enid is in the middle of a serious drought.
In order to help conserve our water here in Brown Country, the Enid City Commission has enacted water conservation rules. Under the regulation, those without private water wells can water for only one hour per day, but only by hand.How watering one hour per day with a hose in your hand is different than putting out a sprinkler for 60 minutes each day is beyond me, but that’s one reason I don’t hold public office.
